Let's start at the very beginning...

Community Cupboard was founded in May 2025 in response to a growing need within Newcastle-under-Lyme: supporting people who are working hard yet still struggling to afford essential food and toiletries. 

The idea began with conversations between Uday, manager of Simply Local, and founder Thomas, who shared the same concern for local families facing hidden hardship. With an 
unused corner of the shop and repurposed newspaper stand, the first Community Cupboard space was created, it may have been small and simple, however it was built entirely for the community. 

Since then, Community Cupboard has grown into a recognised local initiative supporting more than hundrends of families each month across the Borough. This growth has been strengthened by the support of the National Lottery Community Fund and the continued leadership of our directors. In 2026, the organisation expanded further with the introduction of a Social Supermarket, offering good-quality surplus food at very low prices. This model provides choice, dignity and affordability, giving people a sustinable alternative to crisis only support while reducing food waste across the community. 

A major milestone in our development came when Aspire Hosuing became an official partner, providing the building that now serves as the home of both the Social Supermarket and the Community Cupboard HQ. Their support has enabled us to create a dedicated, accessible space designed specifically for community use and long-term growth. 

Community Cupboard is guided by a committed leadership team focused on improving food access, dignity and support for families accross Newcastle-under-Lyme and beyond. In August 2026, Laura Steele joined as Director, strengthening the organisation with her expertise in marketing, communications and community engagment. Together with Thomas and Uday, Laura helps shape our strategic direction and long-term development.
