My Story - Why I started the Community Cupboard
I'm Thomas, the founder of Community Cupboard, a Community Interest Company established to support individuals and families facing food insecurity.
From an early age, I experienced significant challenges with learning and retaining information. In primary and secondary school, I struggled to process what was being taught, which led to feelings of exclusion and frustration. Although I was later diagnosed with mild dyslexia and, more recently, ADHD, much of my education and early adult life was spent without the support I needed. These difficulties continued into the workplace, where I often felt isolated and "different", which contributed to periods of anxiety and depression.
Despite these challenges. I have always had a strong desire to help others who are struggling. My own experiences have given me a deep understanding of what it feels like to face barriers that make day-to-day life more difficult. The perspective inspired me to set up the Community Cupboard.
The Community Cupboard
The Community Cupboard operates as a not-for-profit service, providing emergency food parcels to people in need within the local community. Our focus is on supporting:
- Individuals in work but on low incomes or limited hours.
- Pensioners affected by the rising cost of living.
- People facing health issues or other personal challenges.
The cupboard is more than just a place to collect food - it is a safe and welcoming point of contact where people can connect with others and feel supported during difficult times. We also work in partnership with other local organisations to ensure that people can access wider help beyond food support.

Purpose & Impact
My vision for the Community Cupboard is to:
- Reduce food insecurity for vulnerable groups.
- Provide immediate relief for individuals and families experiencing financial hardship.
- Build a stronger, more connected community where people feel less isolated.
- Offer a stepping stone to further support through collaboration with local agencies.
In a short period of time, the project has already begun to make a positive difference by providing essential food to those who would otherwise go without. However, the demand is growing rapidly due to the ongoing cost of living crisis, and further support is needed to sustain and expand this service.
